OVERVIEW  /  PRE-RAMBLE

September 16 – October 5, 2014

This is our first ever trip abroad, outside the bounds of North America – a really big deal for us! Because of that, we had no particular expectations, no reference points, no comparisons. Our approach was to explore in an atypical tourist fashion, avoiding venues with long lines whenever possible. Italy was everything we hoped it would be. So much history. So many memories.

By intended or casual contact, we interacted with people from: Australia, Canada (Toronto, Quebec, Manitoba), Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington. A real geography lesson.

The following pages contain the cumulative narrative of the diary entries posted during our trip, with the addition of select images. All text was entered one letter at a time, via my left pointer finger, on an iPhone. (What was I thinking?)

Our goal was to document this journey in a casual, conversational, story-telling style. We intentionally avoided making this an exact documentary of the experience.

We could not have kept this journal up had it not been for the enthusiastic encouragement of family, friends, neighbors, and casual bystanders. It was truly an amazing experience.

The Rick Steves "My Way" tour was the ideal "vehicle" for motoring around Italy. We highly recommend this tour!

Thank you for your interest. Enjoy!
